Earlier this spring the marketing team from Google reached out to us to feature QUEORK in their annual economic impact report. They pick one small business from each state and we would represent Louisiana and tell our story as an employer and how google helps us grow and continue to impact the economy of our state. The feature came out in May but an added bonus was that Google flew us out to their headquarters at the Googleplex in Silicon Valley for a meetup with the other 50 states' featured business owners and a day of presentations from heads of departments at Google that we really found fascinating!
One of the most interesting talks was their head of HR describing the culture of the workplace at Google and how they used data to create an environment of 85,000 employees that were beyond ecstatic to be at work each and every day. Sure, the free laundry and free 3 gourmet meals a day were a perk...as were the workout facilities, sports fields, sleep pods, ping pong tables, and commuter shuttles to and from San Francisco. You can bring your dog to work anytime and onsite child care is provided. Google colored bicycles line the sidewalks and are used to get to and from meetings on the 45 acres of the Googleplex. But what was more impressive was the fact that data led them to this realization and that happier employees lead to more productive employees. They encourage a team environment and value humility and those who come from a place of curiosity. It is not who you are, but instead, how you work with others.
Meeting the other business owners was cathartic to say the least. Owning a business is an experience that is difficult to share with those that have not had the adventure and when you get 51 business owners in a room together it becomes lightning rounds of therapy! From owning a cupcake company that appeared on Shark Tank to a retired teacher that saved a hat factory with zero experience, we all had a common thread and bonded easily with each other's stories.
The bigger picture is that this entire team at Google that put this together did so because they want to intimately get to know small businesses and find out what they can do to add value so we can succeed. How can people better find us and what tools exist or are upcoming that can help us tell our story are a few of the things that were addressed and it was such a breath of fresh air for the world's largest search engine to pull us aside and give step by step direction on some very important things.
For that reason I am going to shamelessly ask for your help and if you have not already Write a Google Review (Scroll to the review section and click "Write a Review").
I will leave you with a short video of our Googleplex adventure and if you or anyone you know plans to do some online or in store shopping anytime soon... Google us!
